What Is PRP?
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is often referred to as “liquid gold,” and with good reason. PRP is a concentrated blend of plasma cells and growth factors from your own blood. Facial treatments with PRP stimulate collagen and elastin resulting in firm skin, improved texture, and a brighter younger-looking you!

Facial Rejuvenation Treatments: VAMPIRE FACIAL
A vampire facial uses micro needling to create channels for PRP absorption, resulting in improved texture and tone of the skin.
Hair Restoration Treatments: PRP with ACELL
Hair treatments using PRP + ACELL to stimulate dormant hair follicles to restore hair growth in thinning areas.
Platelet-rich plasma is one component of your blood, along with red and white blood cells. Platelets not only help your blood clot, the platelets are rich in growth factors, which promote healing. Platelet-rich plasma has even more of these growth factors than normal plasma, which means it can be used in combination with some of our restorative aesthetic treatments for optimal results.
To develop PRP, Dr. Ronald Schuster places a vial of your own blood in a centrifuge, which separates the platelets from the other blood cells. This PRP preparation is then used for hair restoration or facial rejuvenation at our greater Baltimore practice. PRP For Facial Rejuvenation
Microneedling and PRP: Microneedling reduces the signs of aging on your face. PRP enhances microneedling results and encourages fast healing. Together, these treatments provide ideal rejuvenation results. It’s a great option for:
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Age spots
- Hyperpigmentation
- Acne scars
- Dullness
- Discoloration
- Rough texture
First, Dr. Schuster uses the microneedling pen to create microscopic punctures in the skin. It’s completely painless because your skin is numbed with a topical cream first. The microneedling pen has a circular head of tiny needles. It is these needles that open up channels in your tissue, prompting a healing response and the development of new collagen. Skin looks great after microneedling alone, and is only made better by the addition of PRP.
Once the entire treatment area has been microneedled, Dr. Schuster smooths the platelet-rich plasma over your skin just like facial cream. The PRP immediately goes to work, getting absorbed into the tissue where it helps your skin heal faster and boosts the results of treatment.
You may benefit from more than one session to get the best results. You and Dr. Schuster will discuss your options during your consultation. This non-surgical treatment allows you to get back to your day immediately after, although you may want to take a couple days off from work because the skin may be red. You can cover up with cosmetics the day after treatment. After a few days, your skin should look luminous, refreshed, youthful and healthy.
PRP For Hair Restoration
Whether you are male or female, thinning hair can be devastating. At Dr. Schuster’s practice, we combine platelet-rich plasma with ACELL to stimulate new hair growth. Packed full of collagens and proteins, ACELL acts like a scaffold, allowing your cells to combine with the PRP growth factors to stimulate the hair follicles.
The process is painless. Your scalp will be numbed, and then the injections of PRP made into targeted locations across the scalp. To reiterate, this PRP is taken from a vial of your own blood that Dr. Schuster will draw during this same appointment. ACELL injections follow the PRP injections.
After about three months, you should begin to notice a difference in hair growth. Talk to Dr. Schuster about whether any re-treatments are necessary.
PRP FAQs
What Is the Science Behind PRP for Skin Rejuvenation?
PRP's effectiveness in skin rejuvenation lies in its ability to stimulate your body’s natural healing processes. When PRP is injected into your skin, it releases growth factors that promote cell regeneration, collagen production, and elastin synthesis. These elements are crucial for maintaining youthful skin structure and resilience.
- Research and Evidence: Several studies have shown that PRP can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and sun damage. The treatment is particularly noted for enhancing the overall skin texture and complexion.
- Comparative Analysis: Unlike invasive procedures such as deep chemical peels or ablative lasers, PRP offers a natural rejuvenation process with fewer risks and minimal downtime, making it an excellent option for those who prefer a more natural approach to aesthetic treatments.
How Does PRP Enhance Microneedling Results?
PRP acts as a catalyst for the natural healing processes initiated by microneedling, speeding up the production of collagen and elastin. The procedure can lead to more significant improvements in skin texture, tone, and firmness.
How Can I Prepare for PRP Treatment?
Proper preparation can help maximize the results of your PRP treatment and minimize potential side effects. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications for a week prior to the procedure to ensure optimal healing. Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy diet leading up to your treatment to support your body’s natural healing abilities.
What Is Recovery from PRP Treatment Like?
After the procedure, you may experience mild swelling or bruising, which typically subsides within a few days. Avoid strenuous activities and direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours after treatment.
How Long Do PRP Results Last?
The duration of results from PRP treatments can vary based on the area treated and factors such as your age, lifestyle, and skin condition. For skin rejuvenation, results can last up to 18 months, though you may opt for touch-up treatments every year or so for optimal results. In the case of hair restoration, results may continue to improve for up to a year after treatment. Regular maintenance sessions may be recommended to preserve the effects of the treatment.
Is PRP Safe for All Skin Types?
Yes, PRP is generally safe for all skin types. Because it uses your own blood, this significantly reduces the risk of allergic reactions or skin incompatibility. PRP is a natural approach that doesn't involve harsh chemicals or invasive procedures, making it a safe choice for rejuvenating and healing the skin, irrespective of complexion. However, individuals with certain blood disorders, active skin infections, or those who are pregnant may not be suitable candidates for PRP.
Is PRP Effective for Hair Thinning in Women?
Yes, PRP therapy is considered effective for treating hair thinning in women. This non-surgical treatment leverages your blood's growth factors to stimulate hair follicle activity and promote new hair growth. It is particularly beneficial for women experiencing hair loss due to hormonal changes, such as those related to menopause or post-pregnancy. Clinical studies have shown that PRP can increase hair count, hair thickness, and the growth phase of the hair cycle. For best results, multiple sessions may be required, and a specialist can provide a personalized treatment plan based on the specific condition of your scalp and hair.
