Your Guide to Recovery After Neck Lift Surgery

A neck lift is a great option to turn back the clock on aging skin and reduce jowls, but recovery takes time. Knowing what to expect in the first few weeks can help you feel more prepared and at ease.

Dr. Ronald H. Schuster, MD, is a board-certified cosmetic surgeon in Baltimore, Maryland. He has helped countless patients through this process with expert surgical techniques and follow-up care.

What to Expect During Neck Lift Recovery

Recovering from a neck lift is a gradual process and usually follows this general timeline:

  • The First Few Days: Swelling, bruising, and tightness are normal. Dr. Schuster may apply a compression bandage to reduce swelling and support your neck. Keep your head elevated and avoid sudden movements.

  • The First Week: Swelling and bruising peak within 48 hours before gradually improving. Mild discomfort can be managed with pain medication. Most patients take one to two weeks off work to rest.

  • Weeks Two & Three: Bruising fades, and swelling decreases, making your results more visible. Light activities can resume, but strenuous exercise should wait. Temporary numbness or tingling around incisions is common.

  • One to Three Months: Swelling continues to subside, scars fade, and your neck takes on a more defined look. While most healing happens within six weeks, subtle changes can continue for several months.

Tips for Healing After a Neck Lift

Following Dr. Schuster’s post-op instructions can help speed up recovery, including these important healing tips:

  • Sleep with a few pillows under your head to help with swelling. Try not to bend forward or turn your head too much in the first few weeks. Maintain a “chin up” position. Don’t bring your chin to avoid “pinching” your neck skin.
  • A soft cloth-wrapped ice pack can ease swelling, especially in the first couple of days. Be sure not to apply ice directly to the skin.
  • No heavy lifting, intense workouts, or bending over for at least three to four weeks to prevent complications.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat protein-rich foods to support healing. Nutrients like vitamin C and zinc can also help with tissue repair.
  • Use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat when spending time outdoors.UV exposure can darken scars and slow healing.
